  • Microsoft has offered Sony a 10-year contract to make each new "Call of Duty" release available on PlayStation the same day it comes to Xbox. Xbox maker Microsoft's latest offer to Sony comes as it faces increased regulatory scrutiny over its $69 billion buyout deal for Activision Blizzard.

  • In total, 16 regulatory bodies around the world have launched investigations into Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard to assess its likely impact on competition. So far, only Brazil and Saudi Arabia have approved the deal, with a number of territories, including the European Commission and the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, announcing more in-depth reviews of the matter.

  • Sony shares sank initially after Microsoft announced the acquisition plans in January as investors feared PlayStation would not get access to hit Activision games. Any move to make Call of Duty unavailable to Sony’s PlayStation console would be “economically irrational,” Microsoft’s Smith said because a “vital” part of the game’s revenue comes from PlayStation game sales.

Why it matters

Call of Duty's future has been highlighted as a particular concern with the acquisition, with regulators raising fears that the franchise may be leveraged by Microsoft to gain an unfair advantage over its competition.
