  • US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had their first face-to-face meeting since Biden took office, one day before the G-20 summit is set to start. In the three-hour conversation between the two powerhouse leaders, Biden voiced his disapproval of China's treatment of Taiwan.
  • Xi underlined the need of utilising history "as a mirror" to "guide the future" and the need to learn from it. He claimed that the international community and the two countries' peoples do not have the same expectations regarding the bilateral relationship.
  • According to Biden, the US and China can manage their disagreements and prevent competitiveness from escalating into hostilities. The two leaders "talked openly about their respective priorities and intents across a range of subjects," according to a White House readout of Biden's remarks.

Why it matters

The two presidents spoke on the phone in late July in addition to participating in a videoconference in November 2021. Over the past few years, tensions between the US and China have increased, touching on a variety of hot-button issues, including Taiwan, the conflict in Ukraine, and the ability of American corporations to supply high-end technology to Chinese businesses.
