Amazon Kicks-off Holiday Season Early

  • The rush to the Christmas sales started early this year as Amazon (AMZN, $115.15) announced plans for an October sales event to meet the demand of people looking for the best deal this Christmas.
  • The online retailer announced that it would host a two-day "Prime Early Access Sale” in 15 countries that would target prime customers, starting on October 12. But retail giant Target (TGT, $148.71) may have already beat Amazon in the race after declaring last week that its holiday marketing campaigns would begin one week earlier this year.
  • Amazon is not calling this shopping event a Prime Day sale even though just like Prime Day sales, only prime customers are eligible.

Why it matters

Early sales have become more popular over the years. Online retailers are attempting to attract customers in the face of supply chain problems, the cost of living crisis, and the general global economic downturn with analysts anticipating that more shopping events will be held in the upcoming months to continue growth.
