Apple Approves App

  • Apple has approved Epic Games' marketplace app for iPhones and iPads in Europe, following a feud between the two companies. The conflict arose after Epic accused Apple of obstructing its efforts to set up a games store on the devices. This dispute involved the Epic Sweden AB Marketplace and was separate from the already approved Fortnite app. The approval came after Apple previously rejected Epic's submissions due to similarities in button and label designs with those used by the App Store.

  • Epic Games criticized Apple's rejections as arbitrary and obstructive, alleging they violated the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The European Commission, which is investigating Apple's app validation processes, has yet to comment. The ongoing legal battle between Epic and Apple began in 2020 when Epic claimed Apple's 30% commission on in-app payments violated U.S. antitrust rules. Apple has since proposed changes to its App Store policies, including allowing alternative app stores and opt-out options for the in-app payment system, although developers still find the "core technology fee" exploitative.

Why it matters

The approval of Epic Games' marketplace app marks a significant development in the ongoing regulatory and legal scrutiny of Apple's App Store practices.
