  • Google has confirmed layoffs in the aftermath of its post-pandemic restructuring, affecting not only the Google Hardware team but also the core engineering and Google Assistant teams. The company acknowledged the elimination of "a few hundred" roles in each of these divisions, totaling around a thousand job cuts on a single day. However, it remains unclear if this is the complete extent of the layoffs, as Google has not provided a comprehensive breakdown. These job cuts come amid efforts by Google to enhance efficiency and streamline operations across various teams globally.

  • While confirming existing reports on layoffs within the hardware team, Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini hinted at ongoing organizational changes and role eliminations across multiple teams. It's worth noting that the company, known for its extensive workforce, had 182,381 employees as of September 30th, 2023, implying that the recent job cuts constitute only a fraction, around half a percent, of the total workforce.

Why it matters

The cuts follow pledges by executives of Google and its parent company Alphabet to reduce costs. A year ago, Google said it would lay off 12,000 employees or around 6% of its workforce.
