  • Rivian Automotive’s plans to compete with Tesla for the top spot in the electric vehicle industry have been hampered as it halts its joint venture with Mercedes-Benz to concentrate on its consumer and current commercial business. This comes three months after the firms partnered up to produce electric vans in Europe.
  • A joint venture to develop huge electric vans for both Rivian and Mercedes-Benz was established in September. It signified an effort to increase production through the use of joint investments and expenses. But the firm announced that due to supply chain challenges, its manufacturing would only make half as many vehicles as it has the capacity to build this year.
  • Rivian will continue to invest in creating vans at its Jawor facility in Poland which has been manufacturing combustion engines and batteries. Furthermore, the firm's largest investor, Amazon, has a deal with the company to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vehicles

Why it matters

Rivian has previously had a relationship with a well-known automaker failing after Ford Motor, one of Rivian's major early financial backers, scrapped plans to produce EVs in November 2021 and then reduced its stake in Rivian in the ensuing months.
