Nestlé and Wunda – two peas in a pod

Watch out Oatly, Nestlé is coming for you! The Swiss food giant (NESN) is having none of Oatly’s rising popularity, so it decided to come out with its own plant-based milk brand, “Wunda.” The dairy alternative line is made from yellow peas and will feature three different versions: original, unsweetened, and chocolate. Wunda, which was created in just six months, is a carbon-neutral product (hipsters, rejoice).

Sweden’s Oatly is about to make a huge stock market debut in the US with an estimated $10b valuation, backed by big celeb names such as Jay-Z and Oprah Winfrey. Nestlé’s own sales of plant-based alternatives saw double-digit growth last year, so it was about time it released its own brand. Better late than never, right?

Why it matters

Oatly’s IPO could turn it into one of the biggest players in the plant-based dairy market – which, btw, is currently worth about $17b, so it’s no wonder Nestlé wants a piece of the (vegan) pie.
