The Oscars slaps film producers

What does the Oscars have against streamable-only movies? Last week, the board of governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences met to discuss rules and regulations for next year’s 95th Oscars set for March 12th, 2023.

One of the biggest changes is that any feature film must have a qualifying theatrical release at some point in calendar year 2022. This is a reversal of a pandemic-era rule that removed a theater run as a qualification for films trying to win awards.

Why it matters

Streaming services like Netflix (NFLX), Amazon (AMZN), and Apple (AAPL) might start to rethink streaming-only releases of their original content if they're looking to win an academy award. Don't be surprised if you see a Netflix film in theaters this year.
