The Succession

  • Elon Musk has a successor in mind to become the next Tesla CEO, according to new comments from Tesla board member James Murdoch. In testimony at a trial challenging Elon Musk’s giant compensation package at Tesla, Musk said he does not want to be the CEO of any company and would eventually appoint a new chief executive at Twitter.

  • During his prior deposition months ago, Murdoch said that Musk never mentioned a potential successor for his role of CEO at Tesla, but on the stand recently Musk suggested a potential successor since then. The director didn’t specify who, but he did suggest that Musk mentioned the person in a somewhat recent conversation.

Why it matters

Some Tesla investors are worried about whether Musk can focus adequately on his role as CEO of the world's most valuable carmaker now that he has been running Twitter after a protracted buyout that at one point he tried to scrap. Murdoch testified that Musk has had some Tesla engineers work at Twitter, a situation the board is monitoring.
