  • Conservative social media app, Parler, revealed that Kanye West has agreed to buy the platform, a week following the rapper's Instagram account being restricted and his Twitter account suspended.
  • The platform promotes itself as a "free speech" and "uncancelable" substitute for social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.  It was taken down last year as a result of its connections to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2017.
  • Parler and West will enter into a definitive purchase agreement in accordance with the initial agreement's provisions, and they anticipate closing on the sale by the end of the year. The deal's financial details weren't made public but prior to this announcement, the business claimed to have secured $56M in capital from outside investors.

Why it matters

Concerns have been raised by critics regarding West's recent online antisemitism, his historical far-right ideology with regard to his relationship with former President Donald Trump, as well as his mental health issues.
