United Airlines (UAL) announced it had placed an order to purchase 15 supersonic jet aircrafts from Boom Supersonic. The order included an option to increase the number to 35. What did you order last week?

Supersonic commercial air travel has only been successfully pulled off twice. From 1968 until 1999, the Soviet Union operated 102 commercial flights with the Tupolev Tu-144. In 1976, Air France and British Airways began offering transatlantic flights with the Concorde jet. The program was retired after a crash in which all passengers and crew were killed. Since 2003, there have been no more supersonic commercial flights.

Given that Boom Supersonic has yet to successfully build or fly a supersonic jet, the deal with United Airlines is still subject to change. However, Boom hopes to have their jets rolled out by 2025, flown by 2026, and carrying passengers by 2029.

Why it matters

It seems United Airlines is trying to make a comeback for supersonic commercial air travel. By cutting the flight time from New York to London in half, they will surely have plenty of customers.
