Amazon’s Cure-all

  • Amazon (AMZN) has announced the completion of its $3.9 billion acquisition of One Medical, a primary care provider. The deal, which was agreed upon in July 2021, marks a significant step for Amazon as it seeks to expand its presence in the healthcare sector. One Medical has more than 200 brick-and-mortar medical offices in 26 markets and around 815,000 members, giving Amazon a considerable boost in its healthcare offerings.

  • As part of the deal, Amazon will offer a discounted One Medical membership of $144 for U.S. users for the first year, down from $199, regardless of whether they are Prime subscribers. Amazon completed the deal after FTC's review period ended, but FTC may still challenge the merger.

Why it matters

This move aligns with Amazon's long-standing ambition to revolutionize how consumers navigate healthcare in the United States. While the company has launched various initiatives, including a virtual pharmacy and prescription perks for Prime members, it has yet to achieve its lofty goal of simplifying the healthcare experience for consumers.
