  • Walmart has introduced a new innovation that allows customers to start a shopping order by texting on their mobile phones. ‘Text to Shop’ platform was built by its global tech team to create a seamless shopping experience. Text to Shop is connected to a customer’s online account, so Walmart knows their usually ordered items. The user just texts the word “reorder” for the items they want to be added to the online shopping cart. They can also put in a new request like “I need milk” to bring up a list of options with pricing.
  • A beta version of the tool was launched for testing at select markets in October last year. Customers can use Text to Shop to create in-store shopping lists or shop online for items available on Walmart Pickup & Delivery, before scheduling collection at their nearest supercentre. Walmart designed Text to Shop by working closely with customers. It is currently available for free on iOS and Android devices.

Why it matters

Walmart enters 2023 as a changed company, redefining and expanding omnichannel retailing for the post-pandemic era. The Arkansas-based operator has spent years in a retail arms race with archrival Amazon and has been seen trailing the eCommerce giant. The past year saw the retailer expand into healthcare teaming up with UnitedHealth and rolling out tech innovations such as Text To Shop, Be Your Own Model virtual try-on, and partnerships via Walmart+ memberships.
