Who would’ve thought the place where Lil Nas held his concert could be a place for childrens’ learning. That’s right, the US video-game developer, Roblox is set to bring educational videogames through its platform for use in classrooms worldwide.
The company announced this week that it’s allocating $10m towards developing three games targeted at middle-school, high-school, and college students. The games focus on anything from robotics (big surprise), space exploration, and STEM-based subjects like science, engineering, and biomedical science. The platform teamed up with Boston’s Museum of Science and other nonprofits to come up with the curriculum. Roblox is known for being a ‘sandbox’ platform where users can basically make their own mini-games. This will be the first time the company itself has put funds towards its own games. The change marks a step towards Roblox’s goal to move to a fully-metaverse platform where users can function as avatars and interchange between different games.
Why it matters
Roblox’s popularity amongst preteens and teens gives the platform a large untapped user base that it can move into a new market: education. Roblox stock closed off yesterday with a 1.1% rise.
